Seminar: The role of shared book reading in language development

Dr Claire Noble (University of Liverpool) will give the final seminar of the 2017/18 series, on the role of shared book reading in language development. The seminar will take place at the University of Liverpool on Tuesday 5th June, 11-12.30.

Abstract

One effective way to promote children’s language development is to encourage parents to read books with their children. Children who are read to regularly tend to learn language faster, enter school with a larger vocabulary, and become more successful readers in school (Bus et al., 1995; Mol et al., 2008). This talk will focus on why shared book reading may be an effective way to promote children’s language development.

I will present work from a series of studies investigating the role of shared book reading in language development. This will include discussions of the role of the speech caregivers use when reading books and whether we can use books to teach grammatical structures. I will also present results from a randomised controlled trial designed to promote language development through shared book reading and discuss the issues associated with the use of shared book reading interventions.
