Join us for our next LuCiD seminar, featuring an online talk on Tuesday, 8th April 2025 (11 am UK time - via Zoom). Prof. Manon Jones (Bangor University) who will talk about "Predictors and characteristics of reading and dyslexia in mono-literate and bi-literate samples".
Abstract: This talk examines the efficacy of a new literacy intervention programme through multiple randomised controlled trials (RCTs), offering both applied insights and theoretical contributions to literacy development in monolingual English-speaking children and bilingual Welsh-English children. First, we present findings from an online intervention delivered during the COVID-19 lockdown, comparing the effectiveness of live, synchronous teaching with asynchronous instruction. Next, we explore an in-class version of the intervention, addressing fundamental scientific questions about the relationship between word decoding skills and long-term reading comprehension. A significant focus of the talk is on bi-literacy and the process of becoming biliterate, using Welsh-English bilinguals as a test case. This RCT evaluated the impact of a Welsh-language intervention on literacy growth in both Welsh and English, allowing us to examine cross-language skill transfer. Additionally, this study provided insights into bilingual spelling development, particularly how children resolve intrusion errors—instances where elements of one language interfere with another. Together, these RCTs assess the effectiveness of a digital, scalable literacy intervention for struggling readers while addressing key theoretical questions in reading science, particularly in the understudied domain of bi-literacy development.
